I have the bobbin cover and was told by ladies at the charities quilt shop that it's a double spool machine.

She has contact info on her website, and may be able to help you with the manual or at least threading info. Scroll down the website page to see the picture and info about the National Two Spool she has. You are right; the case is for the spool.
