It is quite common for a 1/4 inch foot to not be right over the feed dogs. Bonnie Hunter says the antique one stitch machines are the best for the 1/4 foot to be centered. You might be able to put her home made 1/4 inch seam guide beside your foot that she has on her site www.quiltville.blogspot.ca. I think it is under the tabs at the top of the site under Best Seam Guide Ever.
