I think either one would work. The only reason I suggested some weight is because I received a couple of them that when I tried to remove a pin, the whole pin cushion came up off the table. Not good, just frustrating, or at least it was for me
Personally, I do use the walnut shells, I love how it keeps my pins sharp. If anyone is allergic, you need to voice that or that is what you will receive from me.
