That's the way it was in my mom's family. Dinner was a sit down meal. I think lunch was something you packed in a sack or a lunchbox.
We had "lunch" when we ate at school - whether it was carried in a bag, lunch box, or when our school finally served "hot lunches" - usually the meals were very good - except for the time when they cleaned out the refrigerator and put corn and peas in red jello.
