Depends on the brand as well. One brand did gum up my machine needle horribly. I promptly returned it. I think it was Dritz or June Taylor, whatever brand my Wal-Mart carries. So, I haven't tried hand quilting with the spray. I did try hand quilting after glue basting with watered down Elmers and it was hard to quilt through. I hate the pins, so I hand baste now on everything but small projects or ones I'm machine quilting. Those I glue baste...no gumming and the machine can handle the glue. I hand quilt most of my quilts. Maybe someone has used the 505 with hand quilting and can chime in.
