I don't use anything. I try to make the binding the same fabric/color as the back. I then sew the binding on the back first, bring it up over and just hold it in place while I sew on the top several inches at a time. I have never had a problem and always sew my binding on this way. Years ago I used to sew on the front and bring it over to the back and hand sew it. I don't do it that way anymore. I've had problems with my hands and elbows so I choose to put the bindings all on by machine and save my hands for applique or redwork.
