I am not going to use cotton under cats or pumpkins I will use cotton between backing and top where cats and pumpkins will be on top of fabric.
Be sure to put some stiff paper behind the background fabric before stitching to keep the applique flat while stitching. Then tear the paper away before sandwiching.
