I have one of those plastic rolling sets of clear drawers that I use for my thread stash. Each drawer holds 2-3 colors and one last drawer has all my 'oddball' threads like invisible thread and a few cones of poly (the rest of my thread is cotton).
I arrange the thread so that from the front you can see through and tell what the colors in each drawer is. The thread itself is almost all from Connecting Threads, which are wound so that you can easily see the thread colors from the top when you open the drawer.
It works very well for me. It's on casters, so when I switch machines I can just roll my thread cart over to the other machine. On top I have a tray stuck on with double-sided tape that holds my stilettos, quilting gloves, snips, and whatever else I am messing with. It's a nice little work station to have by my machine.
