You could do a french braid between each of the panels. In this quilt I used a panel on the back and did french braids on either side

Often you need to border panels to get them to a size you can use with patch work. I will often make the width of the top and bottom border different than the side. As quilt30 suggested, draft some designs out on graph paper.
