Like bkay says, often the "name" on the machine is rather meaningless in determining what you have. (Unless it's Singer)
Though I'm pretty sure I've got a "Capital" out in the collection, and it's a 3/4 size VS machine made by Davis. "Capital" is such a generic name that I wouldn't be surprised if several companies used it.
If it's US manufacture, with a picture we can almost always figure out who the Manufacture is. By the early 1900's there weren't that many of them left. Davis, New Home, National, Domestic, White, Singer, Free ( I may be forgetting a few, but as you can see, not that many). Though there are probably over 1,000 different "names" on machines.
I even have New Home with the name "New National" on it.
