As for the points, either your cut pieces are too large or your seams are too small making the block too big when you stitch the sections together. This is where your acrylic square is your best tool. Next time you make a block, if it's a nine-patch like this, make sure each section is exactly 4 1/2 inches square before you stitch them together. Put two together and those two should measure 8 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. If it's too large, adjust your seams. Keep measuring following every seam. Watch diagonals, btw. Because I look at a lot of the blocks that run through the swap, the place people most often short seams is on that diagonal. Hope that helps.
