I used to do a lot of garment construction. I made almost all of my own clothing for years. To the point that my friend once asked me "Do you buy clothes?"

(She was going to tell me about a sale but wasn't sure I ever bought anything). I've use all the major clothing patterns and a lot of the designer or boutique ones. It's really matter of what you prefer to wear and how much experience you have.
Some Vogue designer type patterns can be somewhat difficult (lots of details which make the garments awesome but aren't always easy to accomplish). I used to buy a lot of Butterick patterns because they seemed to have a lot of styles I liked. When I was making suits to wear to work, most of my patterns came from Vogue just because I liked their styles. I think you mostly have to go look at the books and find the company that suits your style best. I don't know of a short cut way to do that.
