Yes, that is a typo. Should be a 778, which is very similar to the 758, except it's a free arm.
The chainstitch "plate" that came with the machine is plastic .

I wonder if the metal one would work? I had a chance to look at the manual and the parts list for 778. Kind of interesting - in the manual it calls it
"Bobbin Case Cover," but the parts list calls it
"Chainstitch Attachment Loop Retainer Disc (plastic)"
Have you had a chance to try chain stitching?
