I don't understand why you need a scant quarter inch. Can anyone clarify this? Maybe certain patterns? I've never encountered it. I do sew on one machine only per quilt as all quarter inch seams can be different on different machines.
If you are doing blocks or basically just squares (9 patch for example), use what you want. As long as all the sub blocks are exactly the same size it doesn’t matter. But if you have rectangles, triangles, and other elements in the blocks the sizes won’t be consistent. The turn of the fabric when pressed takes a thread or two in the width, and it adds up. It might be only 1/32 of an inch, but multiple it by 4 or 6 subelements and it becomes 1/8 or more.
