I don't have a wall large enought and I usually use a pattern and just go with that, or I lay rows on top of our bed to make sure I have it laid out right and mark each row with a number in the order they need to be sewn. If I make up a pattern I use 1/4" grid paper and symbols for each color. Then I know which pieces to sew in the rows. Long way to get there but it works.
