I use a lightweight board from Home Depot. It some kind of installation boarding. It's about a half inch thick. It's 8 ft x 4 ft. My husband put light weight wood strips on the back edges for hanging and I stapled (with his industrial staple gun) warm and natural batting to the boards. It's wonderful and was very cheap! It's very lightweight and can hold a large quilt so I can audition borders etc and stand back!

I don't have a wall large enought and I usually use a pattern and just go with that, or I lay rows on top of our bed to make sure I have it laid out right and mark each row with a number in the order they need to be sewn. If I make up a pattern I use 1/4" grid paper and symbols for each color. Then I know which pieces to sew in the rows. Long way to get there but it works.

Any ideas on how to mount some kind of design wall so that it can be taken down when the room serves another purpose?
If the walls are smooth (and not an outside wall), you can probably use some of those 3M command hooks. Cut holes in a flannel-backed tablecloth (and add large grommets if you want) and hang the tablecloth on the hooks. I am thinking of doing this on a rec room wall.

Another option would be to make the flannel covered insulation board someone else mentioned, that is backed with wood strips. Put a permanent hook in the wall where a picture can hang when you need the dining room to be a dining room, and switch out with the design board as needed.

Pat Speth of Nickel Quilts showed us another method too. She took curtain rods. The cheap white ones that expand in and out?? Then took the flannel or you could use a flannel backed table cloth and used big binder clips and clipped it on to the expanded curtain rods. It is portable and easy to store or carry to class! It stood up well too when leaned against a wall.

Here is a link to the 3M Command hooks that can be used on smooth inside walls:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...l/-/B000M3V8XI

If you go to the 3M website, they have $1-off coupons you can print for purchasing locally.
