The website has a list of dealers. I don't think they're at big box stores.
My clothes are very clean in my soft water, with very little soap. Not very little water, though. It depends on what you want and your world view.
For quilts, I think a mechanically-controlled, older machine that allows you to bypass the agitation is kindest.
