Why wouldn't you want to stack the two blocks and draw a line across the diagonal and then stitch a quarter inch from the line on each side and THEN cut them apart? That would save you from having to deal with sewing those bias edges, wouldn't it?
I believe it makes it easier to match the seams when you cut them in half first, but I only did it the way they showed. It's not that bad dealing with the bias, the pattern is so quick that the little extra time dealing with the bias is hardly noticeable.
