I was shown to take a couple stitches in place while moving the threads back and forth. This secures the stitches and you can trim them close. It is working for me and I wash my quilts regularly.
If you do use fray check, make sure you have removed any markings you have used prior to applying the fray check. If you forget you may seal in the markings.
