You can do powder coat at home- depends on the size of your heat source. I bought an old oven to use, but the treadles are still too big to fit inside it.
To Power Coat, basically you use electricity to build up a static charge on the metal, and then spray the powder and it sticks -then you bake it until it's glossy and cured.
I used a "hammered finish" spray paint on a set of icky irons and really like how it turned out. It didn't end up looking a lot different than the sets I have that are still in very nice shape.
