Default Painting treadle irons- what kind of paint? Also oak veneer source?

Enamel, I'm sure. Probably a spray can, but glossy? Matte? Semi- gloss? And the words White and USA are in gold, aren't they? My irons are so old and dirty its kind of hard to tell.

Part 2 is there are some chips missing from the veneer on the top. I have some veneer I harvested from a waterfall headboard, but its not the same as on the old oak cabinets. Is that quarter sawn?? If any of you have any expertise I'd live your help. Thanks!

Here's a picture of the top. We all love pictures, but this really isn't what we *really* like, lol.

On my Singer 128k treadle irons, I didn't use paint, I used stove and grate blackening paste (the sort people used on cast iron range made of graphite) it works well even on rust. You brush the excess rust with a metallic brush then apply the black paste and buff. It's a bit messy and labour intensive but the finish is great and it protects the irons.
It may not be orthodox but it worked well for me 😊

I am in the process of spiffing up my mother's Singer 66 (1915). For my birthday presesnt my son has all the parts of the base powder coated. Looks beautiful and is very durable.

I cleaned mine and used black stove polish- it is a liquid. Just brushed it on. Years later it is still good.

I don't know if a car paint shop would do powder coating. I googled a bit to find an answer to your question and found that is powder coating is done on parts of cars say, the engine brackets or wheel rims but not on the body panels. Powder coating is brittle and shear lines would appear with dents and gravel strikes. The wrought iron hand rails on my front steps came powder coated instead of paint. They are guaranteed for 10 years. I was painting the old rails yearly and they still rusted through. My treadle irons are jet black and shiny. I love them.

You can do powder coat at home- depends on the size of your heat source. I bought an old oven to use, but the treadles are still too big to fit inside it.

To Power Coat, basically you use electricity to build up a static charge on the metal, and then spray the powder and it sticks -then you bake it until it's glossy and cured.

I used a "hammered finish" spray paint on a set of icky irons and really like how it turned out. It didn't end up looking a lot different than the sets I have that are still in very nice shape.
