Barb - that sounds like exactly the same thing that happened here in Aug. I know exactly what you and your husband are going through. The short tempers are a result of the withdrawal (I don't smoke so I didn't have that but hubby did) AND it's such a stressful, frightening time. I want you to know that things will calm down and you will both be fine. As long as you both stopped smoking and are making a major change in diet, he will soon start to feel much better. The anxiety will be there for a long time however. Heart attack patients sometimes get very depressed along with being tense. But that will begin to subside in time. My husband used to think this was the end of his life until I convinced him that as bad as it was, he was able to walk out of that hospital. Many have to be carried out (to put it graphically). I told him to look at it as the wake up call it was and if he makes the changes (which he did) he will be fine. He just went for some tests and everything is perfect. So know that there is hope and a light at the end of this tunnel you are both in right now. Blessings to you both.
