My first quilt was like a QAYG because I made hexis (using my embroidery machine) and then joined them together with the seam allowances to the front, which I then covered by hand sewing bias over the seam allowances. That made the back smooth, but since it was a honey comb, I liked having the bulk of the seams on the front. I also enjoyed the process of covering all the SA's with the bias by hand. I found it really relaxing. There are pictures here:
