Did you see the other one about soaking in kerosene? I'm not sure if New Zealand follows British terminology for Kerosene and calls it paraffin. Here in USA, paraffin is a wax that can seal jelly jars and is harder than bees wax. If you just take the whole unit off, perhaps you can use a wire brush to clean the teeth of the gears.
