I thought it odd, too, that the OP said that the stitch width was at 2.5. However, I was able to locate a manual for the Brother xr3774 and on page 15 of the pdf it tells about if the straight or triple straight stitch is selected, that the "stitch width dial" will change the needle position. So it looks like the stitch width dial set at 2.5 will do a straight stitch in the center position.
