I thought it odd, too, that the OP said that the stitch width was at 2.5.
However, I was able to locate a manual for the
Brother xr3774 and on page 15 of the pdf it tells about if the straight or triple straight stitch is selected, that the "
stitch width dial" will change the needle position. So it looks like the
stitch width dial set at 2.5 will do a straight stitch in the center position.
