Personally I'd avoid raw edge applique on baby quilts because of the threads, as Julie said. When the child is older (which happens very quickly!!) the potential for loose threads will matter a lot less, so I'd save the applique until then.
I understand folks concern for the threads but my concern takes a slightly different direction. Because a baby quilt will be washed more often simply because of use by a little one potentially the beautiful work of raw edge applique could potentially fray too much and become loose past that inner stitching. I agree with Panchita. I would suggest keeping your fine work for when the child is older or as part of a wall quilt to decorate the baby's room. .
