I've got to think that if they stopped making it, there must have been a good reason.

We don't really like to work on them at our shop. The other two local shops won't take them at all. The stitch just isn't good when you're done working on it. As I understand it, the only way to get a balanced stitch is when the bobbin is half full. Otherwise, if you're sewing a zig-zag or decorative stitch, the back will almost always look bad. I've learned that not too many people really care about a balanced stitch, though. I guess as long as the straight-stitch works, that's all people really need.
