In answer to the question posed at the beginning of the thread, I've found that in many beautiful scrappy quilts, there is one or two fabrics that 'ties it all together' and gives the eye a place to rest.
In the quilt shown here, I've used off-white sashing rectangles to contrast against all the blues in the blocks. Also, the same yellow is in the center of each block.
