You can do it anyway you want. It's your quilt. When I made the DIL red and ivory quilt I mixed white on white, white on ivory, white on cream, cream on ivory, ivory on white and pretty much every variation I found. There were over 30 different neutrals in that quilt. The blend is totally gorgeous.
In my husband's log cabin I used any light color.
There are a lot of ways to do a scrappy quilt. You can use one background fabric and a ton of color scraps. You can use two colors and a ton of each one. You can use just whatever in lights and darks.
The real secret to a scrappy quilt is, the more fabric variations the better!!

Everyone has their own way of doing it. For me, lights are: whites, creams, pastels. Darks can be green, purple, red, burgundy, brown, blacks, blue as long as they are deep colors. I pull out the lights then pull out the darks and whatever is left goes in the medium bag.

You know, I'm not a dumb person, probably more of a control freak about this. I can be very artistic, so why do I such a problem with this? It is really getting under my skin. When I get my patterns I'm going to bite the bullet and just tryyyyyyyy! Just to get it over with!! I guess I also need to put away the color wheel!!! It'll definitely be using only 2 colors. Don't think I can go any further than this at this point. OMG!!! Already getting nervous! I wonder if Oprah would help with therapy to rid me of my fears!!   I better get my sisters quilt top done so that I can do some hand-quilting to calm down!!

I am so sorry it took me so long to respond. I had to remember where I got the pattern from. I have actually done this one a couple times. I get bored making the same block over and over but when they are scrappy each one is different and it keeps it interesting.
