You can do it anyway you want. It's your quilt. When I made the DIL red and ivory quilt I mixed white on white, white on ivory, white on cream, cream on ivory, ivory on white and pretty much every variation I found. There were over 30 different neutrals in that quilt. The blend is totally gorgeous.
In my husband's log cabin I used any light color.
There are a lot of ways to do a scrappy quilt. You can use one background fabric and a ton of color scraps. You can use two colors and a ton of each one. You can use just whatever in lights and darks.
The real secret to a scrappy quilt is, the more fabric variations the better!!
