When we make quilts for men or boys we rarely use “themed” fabrics, but the ones mentioned all sound good. We do like to use “outdoor” themes like mountains, trees, water, etc. Usually we minimize florals, and use colors and textures that would appeal to men. Patriotic, darker colors, geometric patterns, monochromatic color schemes, and plaids all appeal to a broad range of men and boys. Also the pattern itself is can help. In my opinion, stars are almost always a good choice for someone when you don’t know what their interests are, and there are lots of different types of stars. We tend to use simpler patterns for men, though if you can match a pattern to some of their interests that works well too (Carpenter’s Star, Cross and Crown, Ohio Star). Also, we have used the color scheme of a favorite sports team and that has been well received. We live in East TN so orange and white is nearly always a good choice.
