If it's necessary to take a "catch-up" course (I really hate the sound of "remedial class") - by all means do it
It makes things a lot easier if one has a decent foundation - and if one didn't learn it way back when - well, now is about as good a time as any to learn whatever
By the way, good luck. I thought math was a blast (at least until I got to calculus) and I went to a community college when I was in my late 50's.
I was a peer tutor and asked to sit in on the "early" math classes so that I would be "on the same page" as the person I was attempting to help - I learned so much in those classes that I had missed along the way.
