When I gave a quilt to anyone, child or adult, it comes with a direction to USE IT. Do not put it on the wall, in a closet or a cedar chest or save it for later because it is precious. I remind the "giftee" that the more it is used the softer it will get and I made it to warm and snuggle them. I always wash my quilts in the washing machine on regular cycle, then throw them in the dryer on regular cycle before I gift them and I tell the recipient that that is what I did, and it most certainly can be done again, and I hope they enjoy this quilt, and it is perfectly ok to wash it.
