For my design wall, I just used fleece. I attached office clips to it and hung it from 3M hooks on the wall. I tried a flannel backed tablecloth, but my blocks would not adhere to it. Maybe the tablecloth was not heavy duty enough, but my blocks stick to the fleece just fine.
