I have made many placemats and almost always use lightweight fleece for the batting. It is easy to find, often on sale, and keeps its shape when laundered. Best of all, the fibers don't poke thru the cotton like poly batting does.IMHO flannelette wouldn't stand up and would be too thin to work well. It also shrinks badly and often has thin spots.
