I have made many placemats and almost always use lightweight fleece for the batting. It is easy to find, often on sale, and keeps its shape when laundered. Best of all, the fibers don't poke thru the cotton like poly batting does.IMHO flannelette wouldn't stand up and would be too thin to work well. It also shrinks badly and often has thin spots.

I have a placemat pattern that actually recommends using flannel for the batting. As another mentioned, I'd want to prewash it to be sure shrinkage was addressed before using it.

I took a class for making projects for the home. One project was placemats. We used Deco Bond for batting. The placemats were flat and showed off the quilting. it was more for formal setting I guess. The mats sure looked nice. Washable too.
