Before I saw the picture of the supposedly ugly quilt, I was thinking that you should use a great backing and use that as the top for the picnic or car quilt. But now that I've seen it, I actually like it. And so much work. I would remove the borders - or at least the brown print border. My thought would be for the black or the darkest brown for the wider border. You've been too hard on yourself. Remove the "offensive" border/s and put it away for a while. When you go back to it with other fabrics to audition, you will find something more to your liking. Then it may not be a utility quilt after all. Good luck.
