I think it's called corking, my mother showed me how to do that when I was a kid. I actually had a kit with different sized plastic shaped thingies to do it with, but she had a big bag with one she started when she was a kid... it was soooooooooo long! I think she has started to make a rug out of it, and then put it away. It must have been around fifty feet long, no joke!
I always made pot holders out of mine...
