It states on the sharpener instructions that it will not restore the blade to brand new and will not work to take out nicks caused from cutting over pins. But it will put a sharp edge on a dull blade. It has definitely extended the life of my blades.
I just ordered it. I figure it will pay for itself pretty quickly.
