Meanmom, I love your quilt. I've seen it in the other thread, you inspired me to use a dark coloured background. Took me a long time to find the right fabric I don't think I will manage to do 1 block an hour!!

Meanmom, I love your quilt and the little corners you made in each one.

I spent the morning printing out the patterns, and quick facts of each state; just to refresh my memory on some of them. Interesting enough, not all states have an official color, but most have a common favorite drink: milk. Next decision is color....do I want to do regions in different colors, or choose a common color or two for each block, or a light, medium or dark back grounds. LQS had a sale on, so I picked up a few bright colors to go with my stash for the 50 states and have them in two clear plastic storage units.

Do I pre-wash or not?? Never have, but might want to start??? Do I dig out my 5 thread serger or leave it buried in the sewing room. Maybe get the old treadle I learned to sew with back in the dark ages to working in case of power outage...but it has not failed us in eight years...so I am hoping that does not happen.

Wow QNS, you indeed have decisions to make!!! Whenever I have pre-washed, I have serged the edges, but I hardly ever pre-wash.

Here are the fabrics I picked out for this project. Hope I have enough!

Beginning last time, I use Kona cotton black or white for backgrounds, and bright Konas for the stars. Really like them!

Ok, here is version 2 of my first block. After much staring I thought the lost star in the center might pop if I did some outlining with thread. The picture is not the best but you can now see the center star. I still may do another fabric in the center but I'm going to let it sit for now.

KC, I like the block without the outline. The star is very subtle but visible and gives the viewer a little surprise when examining the block closer. Both are lovely, your fabrics are so pretty. And don't forget, there are 1.5 million (okay, 49) more blocks that will have the opportunity to jump out and grab attention.

Jeanie, I like all the colors you've chosen. They're going to make a very striking quilt.

wow, i am feeling behind already. anyone have any tips for keeping getting prepared to start this project.
I have background fabric, and then was going to use scraps, do you pre-wash?
I guess I have to figure out what size?
I have the book and foundation factory? should i print one week, two weeks, more?
anything else?
