    2015--50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars BOW

    ************

There are some of us who didn't finish our blocks last year, so I have asked to start a new thread for 2015. Our goal is to complete one block a week, but whatever you can do is great! Please post as you finish a block, small project with your blocks and/or your quilts.

For those who are just starting their blocks, we will be using Carol Doak’s book “50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars”. I suggest starting with Alabama and working through the blocks alphabetically.

If you have this book, please join us. If you’ve already started, but got side-tracked, please jump in where you are and share your blocks.

This is a place to ask questions, share tips to make the blocks easier, and share pictures of your completed blocks and quilts. There will be no patterns or tutorials given and there is no sign-up required. Participants must purchase their own copy of the book. Participants are not permitted to share copies of the book's contents.

Do as few or as many as you like.

I have that book! Maybe I need to pull it out and consider doing this. I have so many books that I've never used. I need to be better about it. I love star blocks!!

I have this book & have made Tennessee & Arkansas out of it (states where my DGKs were born) to go into graduation quilts, with 5 more to do (Tennessee in 2016, Arkansas in 2017, then 3 of Texas). That's really the reason I bought the book. I kinda followed last year but just couldn't participate. I'm ready to give it a try this year!!!! Don't know if I could do 1 a week but will try...
    Love to see others work!!!

mean mom...beautiful. I made mine into three lap tops, one for myself, my daughter and daughter in law. But they have been sitting my my closet because I'm not sure how it should be quilted. They are beautiful and I loved doing them, so any quilting ideas would be helpful.

I'll try to do these this year - did not get far last year! LOL I am not really fond of PP! But I have all my material, book and printed out patterns in a box I set aside last year when things got too hectic.

We are off to Phoenix for a few weeks, but will start when I get back!

Looking forward to seeing all the beautiful blocks gals! My Bee has a UFO challenge due in July and I made my 2014 star top mine. Hopefully, all you blocks once you start posting will inspire me to carry on with the quilting.

Carriem, count me in. Don't know if I will make all the deadlines, but have four finished from the interest piqued in last year's posts. Am working on several projects simultaneously and am beginning to feel overwhelmed!! But this is one project I definitely want to finish. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a great start to the New Year.

I ordered the book. I've never done paper piecing and have wanted to try. They look like fun blocks.

Welcome to those that are planning to start this year and hi again to those who have already started. Good to see there is still interest!!

I have about 16 blocks done....if I remember correctly. I had a couple other projects I had to finish before I could get back to these. Then just when I was planning to start again, DD decided to graduate a year early so I am working on her graduation quilt. When that is done and I am moved into my new craft room (goal is to be by the end of January) I will get back to working on my stars...at least one a week.

Hi Carriem, I've got the book and have been debating about trying this. Almost did last year but another project got in the way.

The finished quilt shown above is awesome.

I too love PP and looking for a challenge.

Big thing keeping me from starting - FABRIC! My stash is a very mixed bag of leftovers from every quilt project I've done.

How do/did you all choose your fabric?

SueSew--several ladies just did scrappy. Some stuck to just batik scrappy. I personally have a hard time with scrappy, so chose a main fabric and am using that in each block. I also am using the same background fabric throughout (well I am making 2 smaller quilts so technically it is 2 background fabrics, one for each quilt). Then I picked some coordinating fabrics. I will try to get a group shot of those I have done early next week. This week is pretty busy NOT in the sewing room...

Curious as to why this thread is running under Challenges and Contests. Is this either of the two?? I finally figured out that it wasn't running in the place where the 2014 one was run and couldn't figure out where it went to until I noticed the path and then found it. Inquiring (or nosy) minds want to know.

Ok! Watched the video, got good tips on PP, got insight into how a star is designed, got out my treasure-box of print and tonal batiks, and selected all my fabrics ...NOT!!!! HAHA I WAS going to select fabrics ...but that could take weeks so I am going to grab a few of the prettiest ones and start with Alabama! It look like some of the pieces are so small they can be done using the lovely gift jelly rolls I was given for Christmas. Mmmmmmmm

yahoo! Cant wait for the weekend!

Of course if the first one looks really nice then I will want to abandon scrappy and go buy a lot of the key colors...Don't you love decisions like this?

I'm excited to start too - but my book left Des Moines yesterday and who knows how long it will take it to get from Iowa to South Dakota . . .

Got my book today! Watched the video - I've never paper pieced before so this should be fun. I think I want to do them with the same or similar color background, - not decided what color though.

Here is my Alabama - I had trouble getting the completed triangle blocks to line up, and finally gave up and took all the paper off. Center is off, but close enough for me - I'll try better on the next one.

this is the very first time I've paper pieced anything.
