#9 Mystery Quilt Train Ride - Who's got scraps?
#283
clue #2
Fell asleep early last night, missed the chocolate party. Sounds like it was a good time had by all. So, since you are maybe still flying on sugar and chocolate, I'll give you something to keep you buy for a bit. Here we go.
Make HSTs that will end up being 4-1/2" square, using a light with a medium. As you can see from my fabric choices, I tried to use mostly medium brights in my sample. And I also tried to use up some of those left over charms. Cut your lights at 4-7/8” if you are going to have PERFECT ¼” seams, which I never do, which is why I always cut these at 5” and trim after pressing. But since you are going to trim these blocks if made from charms, cut your lights at 5”, makes it easier on you. Your finished blocks will measure 4-1/2” square.
You will need 12 light squares and 12 medium or dark or whatever you choose. (or double the number is making a larger quilt.)Just have good contrast with your light. Mark a diagonal pencil line from corner to corner on the wrong side of your light blocks. Put a light with a medium or dark, right sides together, sew ¼” from the marked line on both sides of the line, cut along the center diagonal and press, and trim to a 4-1/2” square as needed. There will be 24 HSTs.
Take 2 different HSTs and 2 four-patch blocks you made last week, and sew as shown. Press. This block needs to measure 8-1/2”. If you are going for a controlled scrappy, you may want to put the same color blocks together as I shown in one of the pictures. You will have 12 of these blocks. If they do not measure 8-1/2” DO NOT CUT DOWN OR WORRY ABOUT BEING TOO SMALL. ALL CAN BE RESOLVED NEXT WEEK. BUT ALL BLOCKS SHOULD BE THE SAME SIZE.
So, is anyone making a top bigger than the 12 blocks that have been called for? I started making another set for a baby quilt for a friend's grandbaby.

Judy: I made 12 more of clue 1.
I was planning on working on this tonight while I watched the Timberwolves basketball game on TV but my son just texted me that he got free tickets for the game so I will probably take a nap before I go. Excited!
