I've substituted blocks because I thought there are too many that look alike (just my humble opinion) and if they have y-seams which I equate to having a colonoscopy (necessary, but only once every 5 years). I can't get the blocks that have lots of little squares like checker boards to come out right when paperpiecing. Those I'm using templates to make but most of mine are pp. There is no backwards unless there are letters involved (again, my humble opinion). I have all my blocks up on my flannel wall--this quilt is going to be very large, may rethink doing all the blocks for one quilt, may divide into 2 smaller quilts. I have so many large quilts and I hate quilting anything large--kills my shoulders.
