I'm going ahead with the plaids. I got the top half of the block finished last night (roof/sky and steeple/sky) and I love how it's turning out. I'm hoping to finish the rest tonight. I'll post a picture tomorrow. I love seeing all of your pictures!

Going through my quilting books today, I found 5 more house block patterns. Each is a different style and size than the others and I can't wait to make them too! The more, the merrier. I can already see that I'm really going to love making my house quilt! :-D :-D

Thanks so much for the paper piecing site! I have never have done it and will give it a shot tomorrow! It looks hard to get the steps down at first but it looks like you get a rhythm done after awhile. I am hoping it will work well with the Dear Jane blocks.

Do you press the seams open or to one side on this?

I worked all afternoon on my paper pieced church and had fun doing ! I never did paper piecing before! I watched the video that Dorinda posted and that is how I learned. It is really cool! I wonder about the person that invented pp...lol. Were they bored?..and a lot of time on their hands? I used the video and paused it when I needed to. The block is done! Now I am not saying I didn't have to do any ripping out! I would get something else on my mind and forget what I was doing!...so had to do some do-overs. I am back to working on Dear Jane blocks so I am going to try my hand at pp some of the blocks. I have so many ufo's in progress :0(. I work on one and think about the other. Stop it! Stop it!

Can you tell me where people have added their pictures of finished church blocks? Thank you for your help.

Are the house blocks suppose to be 12 1/2 or 10 1/2 unfinished? The church block is 10 1/2 do we need to add to it?

You can make the block any size you'd like. I'm assuming that most of the blocks will be 12" finished, but that's just a guess. I'm going to wait until we get all the blocks and then decide what, if anything, I want to do with them - or just add a border to all of them so they are then the same size (whatever that will be).

Blinky 01-05-2011 06:29 PM

Sounds like a plan to me. Thank you!

Okay...I watched the video and actually tried a practice piece this evening...and now I know there is only one way to press the seams!

Blinky 01-06-2011 05:14 AM

There was a lot of bulk at just one point. The roof left bottom triangle shape section. I snipped the seem and turned part of it in the opposite direction. I HATE doing that because I think it weekens the seam. Might have to rip out and do over and let the bulk be there

pittsburgpam 01-06-2011 09:19 AM

What a pain!! I printed the 3 pages and I checked the 1" size, it was perfect. I did page B and C... just right. I did one of the page A and layed it next to the other part of the church and it's too small!!! If I do it over I would have to do the other part with the second window because I only had enough of that fabric to do the windows (used a charm square). I'm going to leave it even though the windows aren't the same size and I'll add onto the top to make it long enough.

Then I'll need to add onto the left side of the church to make it line up to the roof.

It should have been published as a PDF, in my opinion. I copied it into Word and sized it to 100%, it was only 89%.

I am so glad to hear that you were able to print your pattern, at the right size. I just know you can paper piece it, too!! If in doubt, try the practice piece first!! I will be waiting to see your finished block.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the posts. I had taken a PP class along time ago, but never really liked it. I watched the youtube tute that was posted here and found it so helpful. I'm working on my block and hope to post a pic soon. Thanks again everyone for working out the bugs before I started.

Lucymae,

If you follow the directions and go by the numbers you'll find you'll love PP! It's really quit addicting! This church is easy, it gives you options to where the sky is the limit on how to "build" and decorate!! Good Luck and Enjoy!!

Durinda 01-09-2011 02:59 PM

I started last night and am enjoying making my first pp block! I ripped out twice and bled once ( too close to the rotary blade  ) but the fun continues. Hope to finish soon and picture will follow.

You are 2 rip outs ahead of me LOL Printer ran out of ink this week arrgh! Finally got to Staples today & I think I have the pattern sheets consistent after many adjustments ~ that 1/16" really does make a difference. We'll see what tomorrow brings as I start construction again.

Blinky 01-09-2011 03:42 PM

Ouch! Dorinda! This was my first pp project too. Had to rip out. My mind would wander and forget the process! But thought it was fun all and all. I want to appliqué a tree on my block and then will post a pic. Then on to the next one!

Here we go. My first attempt at paper piecing. Boy, is it ever different, felt like I was doing everything backwards to any other type of sewing I've done! After a few bad starts, it turned out not too badly, although I can see a couple places that aren't perfect by any means. I did do the door section twice, as I finished the first one and decided I didn't like the door colour, so this is the second set. Still not sure whether to do a cross or something else over the door, it still looks a little plain to me.
