#10 mystery quilt train ride - more scraps!!

Welcome all returning riders and to those new to our little mysteries, to another mystery quilt train ride. I know this is the third scrappy in a row, but all the chatter on the previous threads of # 8 and #9 were overwhelmingly in favor of another scrappy, so here we go again. This one is sort of a controlled scrappy, as the blocks will be coordinated in color.

As always, I feel all levels of quilters will enjoy this mystery. Club car is ready for our informal get-together, and hot and iced coffee and tea are available. So all new and returning passengers, climb onboard and make yourself comfortable.

This one will be a little different, as I am giving requirements as to what you will need to make 3 different sizes – about 52”” x 20” table runner, a wall hanging or table topper 44-46” square (or smaller if you make smaller borders), and a large cuddly lap quilt of about 60” x 80” which can easily be made into a queen bed by additional border(s) or more blocks. The sizes given will depend on how wide you want your final borders. Many of you have told me they wish to have made smaller or larger quilts than I had planned in the previous mysteries, so maybe this will solve that question.

First, pick out your background. I chose a beige/tan tone-on-tone print. You will need Ύ yard for the table runner, 1-1/2 yard for the wall hanging/table topper, and 2-3/4 yard for the large lap/queen. My suggestion would be something neutral.

Each block will have a color theme, and you can see I have chosen reds, yellows, greens, etc. And the blocks don’t have to be all different, especially if you are going for the large size. You will be making 4 blocks for a table runner, 9 blocks for a wall hanging, and 24 blocks for the large lap. If you look at my red pile, it can be used in different configurations -- perhaps the darkest color will be a 4-1/2” square for Color A with the other 2 colors for B and C, and another block could be made with the medium or the light as the 4-1/2” square. This week, all I will tell you is that for each block you will need three colors – A, B and C -- plus your background fabric. The widths given are exact, so don’t for example choose a strip of fabric 2-1/4” wide, hoping you can use it– it will NOT work.

Color A one 4-1/2” square piece
Color B one strip of fabric 4-1/2” x 20” long
Color C one strip of fabric 2-1/2” wide by 20”

And with this, I will leave you so you can go off and delve into those scrap bins. Happy hunting. While you are in your scrap bins, set aside any small pieces of colorful fabric that you may find, whether you are using it for A B or C or not. These will be used in a scrappy border.

Big Thank You, Judy!! Sounds like fun!!

Thank you! May the fun begin.

I just dropped of scones, butter, and homemade marmalade in the club car. I noticed someone had already made a pot of coffee -- many thanks! -- Oops! I notice that Judy made the coffee -- again, many thanks.

Step 1 printed, now to look through my stash and decide. Might be tomorrow, baby shower and bar-b-que today for our soon to be twin boys grandchildren. First babies for my step daughter so we are all really excited for them to arrive.

I left chocolate chip muffins and apple slices in the club car. Now I'm ready to talk scraps!!

I haven't taken a picture of the last mystery---I did use scraps but my overall look is not very scrappy...I am anxious to get started on this one....I already have my background fabric---went with white tone on tone....going to use all brights which is totally out of my comfort zone....my friend that comes over to do these mysterys with me promised to make me use brights LOL LOL...going for the larger size.....I hope to be a little better this time with posting pictures...

Judy: Love it when you play with values. Especially intrigued by the fact that they are interchangeable. Ohhhhh.....next Sat is so far away.

RJ, congrats - get out of that old comfort zone! White with the brights will be stunning! Make sure to post your pix on the last mystery -- I love to go back and see what has been added to that thread.

Belfry, jaba, bluebonnet and Emma, welcome back.

I also had an idea of using 4 blocks the same to make a table runner. Won't be scrappy, but might try it after finishing some charity half-done tops that I want to get done this weekend.

Question: Can the 20" strips be spliced to reach that length? I have a lot of 12- 18" lengths in the 4-1/2" wide but very little 20" lengths. I hate to think I'll have to cut up FQs to get the 20" lengths, and end up adding to my scrap totes.
