Big cheer to Judy! I have been sick, stuck inside. This project has kept me on the positive side.
Don't forget to send Judy some snow. Pm me if you are interested.

whispering.....some of my geese look like/ act like turkeys.....thinking of changing fabric choices

kwiltkrazy 09-24-2016 03:50 PM

Sunlite--so funny. Hope they work out for you. Just finished my halloween geese, except for trimming. Ended up with 144 gems(extra 1/2 squares) from the cut offs.

paintmejudy 09-24-2016 04:07 PM

Angelia, I don't do geese like this anymore but teach it this way because not everyone has a ruler for it, or don't like to use it. I bought one at Joann with a 40% coupon, it was under $10. I know you end up with bias, but it is so easy for me to do and much more accurante for me. And when you are sewing the blocks together, 99% of the time you are sewing to a straight grain block. I was always not making the block right, or it got cut a tiny bit off because of my astigmatism. Anyway,I know there are a couple different ones out there, this was omnigrid, and I love it.

paintmejudy 09-24-2016 04:09 PM

Aw Dotty, still not feeling a whole lot better. So sorry, hope all is good soon.

Sunlite I love when you are on the trains, it is my entertainment for the day. You never cease to delight me.

jaba 09-24-2016 04:28 PM

Printed out the instructions but no time to sew today. Hopefully tomorrow is a day at the sewing machine. I read a little confusion on the number of squares, guess I need to go back and read from the last step or is there 1 Post that makes the correction? Would appreciate knowing ....Only 6:30 and I'm really ready for bed but been up since 2:45 a.m. I'll be glad when we leave for the winter, think I'm sooooo over thinking this, lots of short nights :(

You're good where you are right now. I just went out to get something from my car and the air is like hot, thick, pea soup. Hopefully it will have cooled down some by the time you get here. The mystery correction is just after today's post. Just a small math error that doesn't affect our projects. We cut 12 squares of three fabrics which makes a total of 36 squares. Judy just made a typo and said we would use all 24 next week. She meant all 36 next week. Then she got upset with herself and posted a huge, red-font correction. You can't miss it! LOL So stop stressing and get some rest. Jan

Love your geese and your mug rug. Purple Serpents is a perfect name! I might borrow your idea. Have a bunch of little HST left over from my Halloween table runner and was just playing with them this morning trying to come up with a use for them. Thanks for posting. Jan

I have several Flying Geese rulers but my fav is the one by June Tailor called "Perfect Half-Square and Quarter-Square Triangles." Makes sizes 1 1/2" to 6 1/2". If you go online there is a tutorial showing how to use it. http://www.junetailor.com/halfsquaretriangles_video.htm
eBay item number:152246516515 has one for $17.79 with free shipping and usually there is no tax. I have the ones by Fons and Porter and Eleanor Burns, but this is my fav and i has all the sizes in one ruler.

dd 09-24-2016 06:10 PM

So we have 1 piece of fabric, E, that hasn't been cut yet, right? E is the dark-dark. Or did I miss something?

kwiltkrazy 09-24-2016 07:42 PM

no you didn't miss anything.

Me too, SUNLITE! I just did worse than you ... I was having a senior moment when I told AngeliaNR about my HST ruler when she was talking about making Flying Geese! I was thinking about CHASEZZZ's post about using the little leftover triangles from the FG we are making! A real DUH moment. She must think I've totally lost it! I guess what I meant to say is if I want to save the little corners I make the FG the way Judy shows here. E.Burns way is easy but you can't save the little corners. ANYWAY... Nothing spectacular looking... but to prove I did them... Here are two sets of my Flying Geese for this mystery, plus I have another set from fall fabrics that I haven't posted yet. You will see them in the finished topper.

AngeliaNR 09-25-2016 12:57 PM

Finished my gaggle (144 of them!). I'll post a picture tomorrow from a real computer (instead of the Kindle I'm using now). I, too, have a bunch of bonus HSTs--I understood what you meant Jan. :)

Got step 3 done so here are pics of the fabric I chose. Thanks for your response Judy

Chasezzz 09-25-2016 01:30 PM

Just Jan, my tiny HSTs were sewn as units when I was making the flying geese...After I sewed the "proper" diagonal line for the block, I then sewed a parallel second line a half inch closer to the corner. When I cut the corner off (1/4" outside the "proper" sew line) I had the small HST ready for pressing and squaring up.

whitepine 09-25-2016 02:56 PM

Jaba, love those batiks!

Just jan, thanks for your follow up on the HST ruler. I was going to listen to that video again to make sure I didn't miss her talking about flying geese. : )

Judy, I also looked on joann's website for a flying geese ruler and couldn't find one. Am I blind?

For years I've been saving the 'bonus' HST left over from flying geese. I sew them as enders & leaders but I think, Chasezzz, your method of sewing at the same time would be a lot quicker. Haven't planned on what to do with them, but someday a scrappy with little HST will call to me.

I have three sisters two of us got the shot two did not .the two that did not got shingles. We are 87,85,81,and78.

lawsonmugs 09-25-2016 03:32 PM

Jaba I love the browns and aqua. JustJan those are pretty flying geese. It's going to be exciting to see the finished runners from everyone. that's my favorite part of the mystery seeing the same pattern done in different fabrics.

paintmejudy 09-25-2016 04:03 PM

Everything looks so wonderful. Not a loser in the bunch! Can't wait for Saturday.

Jan, love that background fabric. I love tone on tone whites, or I guess that is a printed gray on white. Either way. love it.

Jaba, your colors are beautiful together.

Yes, that's how I do mine, then use the June Tailor ruler to square them up. Here's my little mug rug, ready to sandwich, made using 2-1/2" HST.

My full day of sewing was interrupted by a power outage! I made a lot of geese, lots more than I needed, so I guess after the mystery is over I will have a mystery of my own on what to do with all the extra's

I love your fabric Jaba that Aqua blue is beautiful!

Just Jan your puppy on your avatar is a cutie!

My white has an overlay of a very faint mauve. Somehow it just goes with everything. Well actually the white is the overlay I guess. It was a gift from a fellow quilter and I have no idea where it is from or how old it is. I am using the last of it for this mystery. This little scrap is about 3-1/2 x 4-1/2 and that's the end of it. Probably can't tell much from this scan but if anybody recognizes it I'd love to know.

Diane and M-Faye, both are very pretty. Can hardly wait for the final reveals. My mom used to say, "You're wishing your life away!" Well that's what I'm doing... Its only Monday morning and I'm wishing it was next Saturday! LOL

Love all the fabric choices...can't wait to see the finished projects.

I am traveling October 1-5, so mine will be finished after I return.

Finished quilting this table runner I named 'Going Batty'. It's made using the Tiddly Winks pattern, we discussed here earlier. The pattern reminds me of Bats so I thought it would make a fun Halloween runner. I used French knots for eyes because I didn't have any seed beads. Its entirely made from my stash.
