#14 Mystery Quilt Train Ride
 

Welcome all new riders and returning passengers to our 14th mystery! This train ride will last another 3 weeks, ending on October 1. New clues will be posted here in the Blocks of the Week and Month section, under this same posting -- #14 Mystery Quilt Train Ride -- and will be posted by 8:00 a.m. Pacific time. Bookmark this page for ease of finding it each Saturday. I think this quilt will appeal to all skill levels, from confident beginners to those experienced quilters. Many new participants to my mystery quilt may wonder why I give detailed photos and instructions. They are for those who may need a little reminder. We are going to be making a table runner that will measure approximately 19” by 48”
.
As you know, I usually design my own mysteries. However, a friend showed me an old block. (Fun story about this block that I will share on the last week.) I made the block and turned it into a small wall hanging, and decided it would be perfect for a mystery. (My friend had agreed it could make a good mystery.)

Today you will be choosing fabric. Originally, I had planned to make a wall hanging but wanted to sew from my stash. Nothing in all those bins of fabric was either big enough (I have a LOT of scraps) or didn't appeal to me enough that I wanted to look at it every day, so therefore, we are making a runner. However, I think this pattern is unusual and beautiful. If someone wants to make 3 times the number of blocks this mystery will give directions for, you will have a good-sized and striking wall hanging, or make four times the number of blocks and it could be a lap quilt.

All fabrics are WOF, 42” useable fabric. I have given you a few extra inches to allow for squaring up your pieces. A B C and E are batiks. D is a very light tone on tone. Naturally, you don’t need to use a monotone collection of fabrics.( I am going to make a Christmas runner for my sister, and those fabrics are shown in the last picture)

I suggest small to medium prints. Although the A print of the batik and Christmas looks big, it will work because it is so busy. Meaning – not a lot of white space.

A – I used a dark – this will be the focus fabric in the quilt, and even though it is not the largest piece, it will show up the most. 18 “. Feel free to be dramatic with this print!
B - medium print – ¾ yard
C - medium-light print – 1/3 yard
D – light – ¼ yard
E – dark dark – 7” -
F – binding – 4 strips WOF depends on the width you like for your binding.

Since I didn’t have enough for sashing and binding, I used 2 additional fabrics that went well with the batiks. You may want to wait until the end to decide on whether you want to repeat a fabric or two from the quilt for these things, or if you want to add in some additional fabrics. Your quilt, your choice! I’ve had these brown/black batiks for a while and never wanted to cut into them but this seemed like a good project for them. It will be a gift for me, as I don’t have any more of the fabric, not a give-away when my daughter says, “Oh, I like that soooo much!”

OK, first with a question, too! I like all your fabrics, but now you have me thinking Christmas... In your second set of fabrics- is the green pindot "B" and the red "C" and the Holly would be "E"? No that can't be right because "D" would be the lightest! Will you please tell us what the letters are for your Christmas set?

Oh Evie, that sounds wonderful. I like anything with orange-cranberry. Used to buy English Muffins with flakes of orange in them. They were so good, but they don't seem to sell them here anymore.

Jan - I just pulled what I had from the Christmas fabrics. The plaid will be A, green is B, red is C and the lower right is D. I think the upper right will be the border, and not sure about sashing, might be that dark print.

Have lots of Christmas fabrics...let's make this happen...

I made it !! I love the black and browns ,But I might also go the Christmas fabric way. I also need the fabrics lettered for the Christmas one. Thanks judy. I love when there is a ruler to help figure the size of the print. I brought warm caramel buns to go with the coffee. One of the best things about the train rides are the sugar free, fat free goodies. No calories.

will this lend itself to a larger quilt? Hi everyone, I'm here with goodies in hand.

Brought all the goodies I said: bedock and wine, brought beer for the beer lovers and a chocolate trifle for dessert.

Kwiltkrazy, this will make a spectacular larger quilt! I mentioned making 4 times the number of blocks, without counting the borders, you will get a piece about that will make a very nice sized lap quilt. If at this point you still want it larger, add more borders or make more blocks.

And you brought bedock for lunch!!!!!

Mary, I haven't started this one yet, taking time to breathe after getting #14 done. Yesterday when I was finishing writing the instructions for today, I went in and labeled the Christmas prints, but looks like I pulled the wrong one from the pix file.

OK, Here's what I pulled so far. Not sure what letters yet,[ATTACH=CONFIG]557929[/ATTACH] but definitely the floral. The blue tonal matches the lighter blue in the Mums. Still thinking about raiding my Christmas fabrics, but this matches my family room.

Dottie - Yes, but may need a bit more yardage of fabrics. Don't know how many directional prints you are going to be using. Glad to have you back on the train.

Jan love those fabrics. I think the big floral will work fine for A.

I hope so because I'd prefer a topper to a runner, too.

sidelined this morning at a crossroads in Jackson hole ( https://youtu.be/psfFJR3vZ78 ) but I brought a bag of 60% cacao - very dark Chocolate, yummy....and those little cocktail napkins, because this stuff melts on fingers really fast. have not pulled any fabric yet (because I am testing this chocolate) but I am thinking greens, have a huge box of greens and my DGD in-law loves green (and my Grandson). So today another GS is playing football at Notre Dame and another (have 7 GS) is Cheerleading at University of Arizona...the YL will be standing on his hands,O'my, and doing flips in the air......so a bit nervous, here....have seen the practice tapes and they know what they are doing, still maybe football is safer???? will find the box of green and be back between games.:sew::wave:

OK, I narrowed my selection down and changed to a different blue. This set definitely is a go. If I make a Christmas one it will be in addition to this one.

Its been about 2 1/2 hours since this first posted and I see Judy is still here. It sure takes a lot of time and work for her to bring these mysteries to us and I would like to say, "Thanks, Judy, for all the hard work you put into this. Jeannie and Jan, yes it will lend to a table topper, that is what I originally wanted to make but didn't have enough of the batiks. So - to make a square topper, just make ... hmmmm ... math-dead today ... in order not to give anything away, just make 1/3 more. So if I say to make 3 of something, make 4. If I say make 8, round it up to 9. One third of 9 is 3 so add 3 and you will make 12. Clear as mud?

quite a few of our "regulars" haven't shown up. Hopefully they don't miss the train. But it's Saturday and a nice day in many parts of the country, so maybe all are outside enjoying the weather while they can.

A MINOR GOOF BUT EASILY FIXED AT THIS POINT.

The E fabric, listed at needing 7" wof -- you will need 9". No big deal, but wanted to mention this in case someone really had their heart set on something they only had a 7" scrap of in their bin.

Haven't been around for awhile. I am more busy now than when I raised my children. Just got on here and was soooo happy to see another one of Judy's mysteries. I think I have only missed doing one. Thanks for letting me join the ride. I'm bringing snow cones. Seems like that is all I make anymore. Kids LOVE them. (But so do I).

What day is first clue?

Thanks for doing this Judy. Looking forward to this train ride. Now I have to make the really hard decisions - what fabric to use. That is usually the hardest part of the train rides. I brought along a triple chocolate cake.

I read one post where someone said she had to work today. I had planned to get my grocery shopping done early this morning, but decided to wait and go tomorrow and miss the Saturday rush! Hopefully, more will be waiting at the next station. I did a headcount and so far I've counted 15 passengers.

Oh no Dotty. Good luck at the show. Here are my fabrics A-D. A being on the left side and continuing to right. They are burgundy's. ( in case they show up pink or purples in the photo). Wow dark chocolate and triple chocolate cake. Yummy. I think it was Jan posted her pinkish colors and I noticed I have most of her fabrics too,if the color shows correctly. My picture looks to pinkish too. They are really more burgundy even the lightest one. :confused:
