Thanks to all for the compliments. and I would love to say that I am loving all the pics of blocks posted. Great colors and fabrics and to any who might feel that they are behind just keep sewing. We are all behind at sometime or another. Keep up the good work and keep posting. Love the pics.

I'm glad that I did blocks ahead because I haven't done any since mid April and I haven't done any tris yet. Maybe I will start doing sashing so I can figure the dimensions for the tri base.

I've been working a bit on th carpenters wheel. It is more tedious than DJ. All those 6 pieces - points - meeting up. And, yes, I am doing Y seams. They are so elegant. I should finish the top by the end of the summer so I can hand quilt all winter. I am NOT giving this one away. It will probably end up here at the cottage.

I am so fortunate to have good neighbors to watch and protect me. I can leave TV, compiuters and quilts here without worrying.

@ Fraew - I'm a little worried about my color choices and whether I can live with them or not, also. But I haven't had the nerve to put them all together yet.

I'm close to choosing a background color for the sashing and for in between the triangles. For the background for the blocks I'm using several white on white prints. I'm considering a tan or light brown for the sashing. I'm working with 4 1/2" finished. How much fabric are you all buying for sashing and in between the triangles?

Last nite I printed out two patterns from the software..they were both rotary cutting, and I have enlarged my blocks to 6 1/2" - 6" finished......anyway, having fun piecing, finished both, and measured......both shy of the 6 1/2"......guess I know what I did wrong...that scant 1/4" seam.......so my question....should I leave them and wiggle them in when I construct the actual top or toss and do again....what would you do.......and now I will be ever diligent of that SCANT seam.........

Geri - there are lots of different ways to handle this one.

First - how "shy" are you?? If the square finishes 6 1/4" I would say leave it - pin a piece of paper to it saying 6 1/4" or 1/4" small so you remember a year or more from now - whenever you go to piece it together. In many situations applique is cut down to 1/8-3/16" seam allowance. If that scares you - put another row of stitching inside the seam allowance to strengthen.

If your block is smaller than that, what does the outside edge look like? Many of these blocks have borders on them and "fixing" yours to make in larger could simply mean removing outer edge and cutting that one wider. The alternative is to add a 3/4" strip all the way around - I would make sure to cut it at least 1" because you have to remember you will be making what's there 1/4" smaller all the way around. Many DJ blocks have extra thin borders all the way around. In fact, I'm sure Jane Stickle must have run into this 'shy' problem herself here and there. When you examine her blocks carefully you will notice some with very narrow borders all the way around, and some with only one or two!

Remake ONLY as a last resort... :) of course that being said we are our worst critics! ....just try to remember it is not only your quilt, but each is one block in the midst of 224 others!

I have decided to "adjust" the shy blocks instead of redoing.....not worth the frustration.....'
I printed out patterns and did two more blocks last nite.......added 1/4" to whatever part was the outside edge of the blocks and with a little trim there was the 6 1/2" block needed. So, that is going to be my strategy from now on.....add where I can, trim after......I have been quilting for several years and these blocks seem so tricky.....I guess because some of them are so unusual, the pieces just seem to go against anything I have ever done before and I really feel challenged......but it will not beat me. If Janie could do these buggers by hand with scissors, I can do at least a reasonable facsimile with all the "tools" (toys) available now......
I also have the Farmer's Wife and Pony Club....as I do this one, I am wondering if those two are just as "challenging"--have any of you done either/both of these.....what is Dear Hannah about...saw that book too......

Dear Hannah is another quilt about same time frame as Jane's but more applique/pictorial blocks ....not quite so geometric :) The book of patterns was also put together by Brenda as was Jane. I'm familiar with Farmer's Wife ...have the book & plan in my bucket list!! What is pony club & Carpenter's Wheel [or dare I ask???]
