2012-2013 Dear Jane Stickle 2d Cyber Party Pictures and Discussion

5 Attachment(s)
This post marks the official start of the Dear Jane Stickle 2d Cyber Block party. I never guessed when I decided to start an ‘interest’ thread back on October 23 of last year, that there would be so many wonderful quilters as excited about going on a ‘Dear Jane” journey as I. The reason for the new location is so that information will be easier to find. Over the past 12 weeks our numbers have grown to 115 members who have contributed 873 posts. My post/page preferences are set to 20/page and I have over 44 pages!! I have taken some time to gather many [hopefully all] of the wonderful websites and pointers members have shared into this first post. The schedule will be attached to this post and also will be added as an inline text by one of the site moderators and fellow “Janiac” QuiltnNan. I have also asked ‘fromZstore’ if she could re-post her first blocks for all of us to see. Rose Marie, Feathers N Fur, and pjnesler have some great blocks as well [please don’t feel left out – I know more of you have already posted and will post again – we all love to see what you have so far…. I’m done but need to find the computer link to camera card… ***Several members have agreed it would be useful to “meet” on a weekly basis to talk about our blocks for the week. I will be in the chatroom every Tuesday morning 7:30-8:30 am Pacific time. If that time doesn’t work out and there is a problem – let us know by posting on the board. If I can’t meet – I’m sure there will be another member willing to help. Lets see 100+ new Dear Janes by the end of 2013!!! Requirements: To join you must have access to a Dear Jane book or the DJ software. I have both. With the book, you can use a ruler to determine what size to cut various pieces of your blocks very easily for the easy blocks, or you can copy the pattern onto freezer paper. With the software, you can print out any block pattern you like, adjust the sizes of your block, or pick and choose which blocks to make and arrange them whatever way you like. Printing with software – in order to avoid wasting so much paper when you print your patterns using software you need to “move” the pieces to one side before printing. Turn your paper around and print the next block at the other end of the paper. ..from NDQuilts…”If you are prining just the block outlines the yes you can fit two blocks on a page. I adjust the top margin as narrow as my printer will allow and print block 1, then rotate the paper to print block 2. If I remember you cannot print any text in the header. When doing tris the tri can be nudged via the margins so a right and left tri will fit on one page. I am handpiecing so I print the blocks outlines on freezer paper, (not the provided templates) cut apart with scissors and adhere with the iron. When I cut apart the fabric I add seam allowance. Please see Linda Franz for great instructions on the process.” http://lindafranz.com/galleries/my-dear-jane/22 A formula for changing sizes.. to figure triangle size when you change size of blocks - a little math required... determine % increase example: 4.5=100% if you want to make 6” blocks… [6.0 x 100]/4.5 = 600/4.5 =133% …the easiest thing to do is to make a copy of the actual size triangle and set the copier to 'enlarge' size to 133%. The size of the triangle will change from 5x8 to 6 2/3 x 10 2/3 Other Pointers: QAYG [Quilt as you go] tutorial by Lacelady can be found in: [Dear] Jane Stickle Cyber Block Party - Jan 2010 Thru…. Post #3202 – this will be on p.161 if your preferences are set at 20/page There are many locations that have pictures of variations of Dear Janes. Be sure to visit: http://greenfairyquilts.blogspot.com...revisited.html - here you will find DJ done in Kaffe Fasset fabrics. I visit it often to drool over the quilting! Be sure to visit the main Dear Jane site, set up by Brenda Papadakis herself here: http://www.dearjane.com . She has links to many other Janiac sites as well as pointers. Another site just posted by katybob last week can be found here: http://creativeribbons.blogspot.com/...u-gomy-dj.html . She shares her method of QAYG, making her DJ in nine sections. Have to say I’m tempted to adjust my own layout to include a medallion. Love the setting [although I would still include those triangles]! One of the best “help sites” to visit is http://thatquilt.blogspot.com . If you scroll down the page you will find a chart that links you to tutorials for every block in the DJ quilt. DottyD told us that you can use the design wall created by Sharon Mastbrook. It can be found at http://www.smastbrook.net/dj/djvdw.htm Please observe copyright regulations by crediting Sharon if you use her design wall. Another helpful site http://auntreensquilts.blogspot.com/ . Hope to “see” many of you online at 7:30 am Tuesday morning PACIFIC TIME.

DJ Blocks - Week 1 (It's finally here!)

Here's mine. The top three are from the DJ I started last summer using CW fabric. The bottom three are for this Cyber Party. I'm way over half-way finished with the first DJ and I'm enjoying seeing the improvement of my skills with the new blocks.

How do I find this?

Go to the first post of the thread. At the top is Page 1 of xx with a tiny arrow at the left of Page. Click on that and it will allow you to put a page number in. If you are set to 20 posts/page, enter 161. If you have 40 posts per page, you would enter 81. But to make it easier for everyone, the link to it is here http://www.quiltingboard.com/blocks-...tml#post954253

Cre8tvlwyr 01-15-2012 08:37 AM

To add to Nancy's answer --for those who want to know how to change settings.
Go to top of any page and click on "settings" [near the top right]. A column appears on the left. Scroll down under 'my settings....my account' click on "GENERAL SETTINGS." On the right you will see many possible adjustments you can make to the way things appear on your screen. Scroll down about half way down page...under 'thread display options' you will be able to change the number of posts per page. Mine is set at 20, Nan's is set at 40, I believe the default is somewhere around 8-10 [don't know exactly - I just thought I had to go to the next page too often!]
See you later!! Enjoyed all the pictures [hopefully will be able to add mine in a few hours]
Gus

GRRRRR! My Dear Jane Cd finally arrived yesterday. I went to install it and found out it doesn't work on a MAC computer. My Old ancient computer is a PC. Not sure if I should install it on there or sell the CD. If I put it on the old PC I will have to print everything out or keep running up and down the stairs. I don't know why so many programs don't come with a MAC version when Macs are so popular. I am off tomorrow and was going to sew on this all day. I want to go queen sized and don't know how much to enlarge.

katybob 01-15-2012 12:43 PM

Fromz, I still can't get over your embroidered blocks -- they're really amazing! I'm guessing you can't quilt them with batting and backing, so what's your plan?

I have been working ahead, too. Because I am using a variety of blues, I am doing some middle and end blocks so it won't be obvious that the early blocks have one sort of blues and the later blocks different ones.

I like the 5.5" blocks I decided on -- I had done some 4.5" ones and wasn't all that happy. I'll post pix next week.

It is with much regret that I'm pulling out of this group. Due to some unforeseen circumstances my DJ will have to wait for awhile. I will visit this thread often and follow along on your journey. Happy sewing.

PS: When the time comes I at least have all my stuff!

dungeonquilter 01-16-2012 06:32 AM

The link for Sharon Mastbrook doesn't seem to be working. I am waiting for my rulers to arrive. Also have to finish up a few projects for our upcoming quilt show, so will probably be a bit late starting.

QuiltnNan 01-16-2012 07:10 AM

dungeonquilter, i have tried many times to get to that site. it doesn't work for me either. i'm hoping that someone has a suggestion or can confirm that it is still a valid site.

Kallie 01-16-2012 10:11 AM

Hello Everyone,
If possible I would love to love to join in on the Dear Jane quilting journey. How would I go about becoming part of the group?

I just started my blocks last night and I am doing a Rainbow Jane quilt. I will have to go out of order a little bit as I do not have all my fabric yet. Below are my first two blocks A6 and A8 and I loved doing them!!

So far I am trying my skills at hand piecing and it went fairly well I think. A8 will lay down flat when I press it, I just didn't want to take another picture. I am doing stem stitch however vs running stitch as I could not get the hang of it to do small enough stitches but I am pleased with the results of the stem stitch so I think I will just continue that. Can't wait to see all the lovely blocks!

Kallie

Welcome, Kallie. Of course you can join. Your blocks look great. How did you get the block border pressed/imprinted on the blocks?

Cre8tvlwyr 01-16-2012 10:32 AM

Nancy.. I'm not understanding your question....and Welcome aboard Kallie - everyone is welcome to join!!!
Love the blocks [do you been the 'block size seamline?? Nancy]

On Kallie's blocks, there seems to be a fold line pressed. I'm wondering, since it is so perfect, how she did that.
And my previous question about smastbrook.net ~~ I'm not able to connect with the site, even though I have internet connections on other sites, this one comes up with an error message in IE and Firefox and on my laptop, too.

welcome Kallie -- what is stem stitching??

Am unable to find the icon for posting pictures. I have resized the picture but am not successful in posting the pictures. I am a Mac user and am using a PC but I don't think that is the problem as we are on the same internet. Where is the icon. The help says at the top of the message. ???? I am replying to thread. ???

katybob 01-16-2012 11:33 AM

gls234, if you're using the "quick reply" message, for me the icons are right above where I'm typing, and the insert picture icon is the 4th from the end. If you went to "Go Advanced" before you started your message, there are three rows of icons and the insert picture icon is toward the end of the 2nd row, right after the "link" and "unlink" icons. It's a green and blue square that looks a little like a picture with a frame.

It just occurred to me that you may not be seeing all the icons. Go to "Settings", then "General Settings", then toward the end of the page, make sure "Enhanced Interface" is checked. Be sure to save your changes at the bottom of the page. I might be full of baloney, but I think that's how I remember it!

Thank You all so much for the welcome and the compliments on my blocks! I am loving seeing all the pretty blocks!

I am using quilters pattern paper from fons and porter but any type of freezer paper will work. I left the freezer paper on while stitching and re pressed it as needed. You can see the outline of the freezer paper through the fabric. I plan on leaving it on until I stitch the blocks together.

As for the question from Mim about stem stitching:

Stem stitching is one type of emboidery stitch. It is very easy to do! The link below is to a quick instruction on it. If the written one is hard to understand I am sure there are some good video tutorials on youtube that can show you and you can follow along with! I know it usually helps me. http://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/...tem+Stitch.htm

QuiltnNan 01-16-2012 03:12 PM

thanks, Kallie :)

Cre8tvlwyr 01-16-2012 03:23 PM

Sharon Mastbrook's site seems to be down. If you have the DJ software, you can accomplish the same result or close to it by using your colors in each block and placing in the design your quilt section as you go along. I used to be able to get to Sharon's site through the software link as recently as last week, but this is no longer the case.

DottyD 01-16-2012 03:30 PM

Yes, it looks as though all links to S Mastbrooks design wall have been removed - I wonder why ?

QuiltnNan 01-16-2012 03:55 PM

thanks Cre8 and dotty :)

You can get a program called boot camp from the apple store. I have a laptop mac that I have boot camp on. what it does is it allows you to allocate so much memory to a PC site on the MAC. So now my laptop also is a MAC as well as a PC. So I could use my DJ cd on it. I am not sure if I can get bootcamp for my big MAC computer or not but worth a try for you to go into apple and ask them.

Thanks so much for your response. The "Enhanced Interface" was the answer. I normally have no problem with figuring out computer problems but finding those icons really stumped me.

Here are my first three blocks. I am hoping to do a trip around the world as my color theme.[ATTACH=CONFIG]303918[/ATTACH]

Oops. Made them too small. I'll go back to the directions and try again. Next week I promise to have it right.
