B-9 This is the wonkiest of the 3, and is going into the competition for wonkiest block. I can see that I may lose part of a point, but that is the way it goes. I am seeing improvement as I progress. My goal in doing this quilt was to improve my sewing & quilting skills, and I can see that happening already. That is why I am not redoing blocks. Unless it is really bad. I will do a second DJ when I get this one done, and will hopefully do a much better job.
Keep posting pictures, everyone, I so love seeing them all. |

Gladys, your affairs of the heart blocks are absolutely wonderful!

Well Spartan... I wouldn't worry too much about having a wonky or crocked piece here and there. When you consider that in her Right Bottom Corner kite Jane Stickle embroidered she used 5602 pieces [ahem...ouch!!] we could make 56 booboos and it would only cover 1% of the whole quilt:D That won't be noticeable to anyone [unless of course you were to place a bright chartreuse piece in the middle of that subdued postbellum Civ War quilt!]

Thanks, Gus, I just laugh about the wonky blocks, because I am the one who sees them. Others don't. By the time I get this done, I will just laugh about the improvement [hopefully] of my blocks. And really, I can already see that. I just finished one last night and I really had SHARP POINTS on the applique piece. But, without doing this quilt, I would not have improved my skills. That is the reason I am doing this. I am loving every minute of it, and especially seeing all the fabrics and colors going into others' quilts. What a wonderful group. Can't say THANKS enough to you-Gus-for having started this thread.

Good thinking Gus and Spartan quilter -- It is really a way to learn to do new things and improve -- Good thing the blocks are so small -- we can do small stuff. Wouldn't it be just awful if an applique project was a whole big block?? I shudder to think of the change from the beginning to the last part. This way when I get bogged down -- last week I didn't get to do any at all and this week I have done 4 -- some from the schedule, some in the M row.

I use threads "Yli Threads 60/2 ply are 100% cotton" color it closest to the piece to apply or smoke color. The needles are the "Black Gold Hand Sewing Needles (Applique/Sharps)". Only I have to say that she is "they wash", but they are wonderful because they pass through any plot of fabric as if nothing!. And the method is the Appliqué whit Freezer Paper. I learned it to Erin Russek and Karen Kay Buckley (in her blog the first and the second for her DVD). As in my country there is not freezer paper, I use templates that I conducted with washed medical x-rays. And I can only say that the secret is in practice much and each block will be better than the last. I hope have answered your questions clearly! A big hug! |

So on A-2, somehow I managed to cut off the points from the middle row triangles and didnt' even noticed til the very end. It bugs me, but like I said earlier I don't think I'll worry about it. On A-4 I should have cut the last pieces (edges) at least a 1/4" wider. I'll probably take the time to fix that one (not too much reverse sewing with that boo-boo!!).
P.S. Gave up on trying to find my phone and went and got another tonight. Bummer, though, the pictures are noticeably grainier. |
